GAME NOTES: The UAB Blazers and Marshall Thundering Herd wrap up their respective 2007 campaigns this Saturday, as they meet in Conference USA action in Huntington. The Blazers enter the contest riding a five-game losing streak and that includes a 25-9 loss at Memphis last weekend. It was the sixth loss in as many road games this season by UAB, which dipped to 2-9 overall and 1-6 in conference play. As for Marshall, it dropped to 0-6 on the road following a 35-28 loss at Houston last weekend. Despite the loss, it was a solid effort by the Herd, which has gone an even 2-2 over its last four games after starting the season off with seven straight losses. Now at 2-5 in league play, the team returns back home, where it has won two straight games. Marshall owns a 2-0 edge in the all-time series with UAB and that takes into account last season's 31-24 triumph in Alabama. The Blazers have been pretty inept on offense this season and they haven't gotten much better of late, scoring over 10 points in just one of their past five outings. For the season, UAB is averaging a poor 17.8 ppg and it is gaining just 310.1 total ypg. Last weekend, the Blazers generated a modest 338 total yards of offense and they scored only nine points in a loss to Memphis. Joseph Webb and Sam Hunt split time at quarterback and they combined for 233 yards and two interceptions on 25-of-39 tosses. The duo also racked up 78 yards on the ground. Hunt has earned more of the snaps this season, but he has been pretty ineffective, throwing for only 156.0 ypg with nine touchdowns and 14 interceptions. He however, has rushed for 223 yards. As for Webb, he has split time between quarterback and wide receiver, and he has thrown for just 479 yards and four scores, while pulling down 30 passes for 459 yards and three touchdowns. Webb is also dangerous when the ball is tucked away, ranking third on the team in rushing with 236 yards. On defense, UAB hasn't had much success either, as it is giving up 34.1 ppg and 487.7 total ypg on the season. The unit has struggled against the pass (223.6 ypg), but it has been simply abused by the run, allowing 264.1 ypg and 29 touchdowns on the ground. In last weekend's loss, the Blazers were burnt by Memphis for 563 total yards, including 265 via the run. The defense even failed to record a single sack or force any turnovers. Joe Henderson paced the team in the loss with 12 tackles and Will Dunbar finished with nine stops of his own. For the season, Dunbar leads the club with 106 tackles, while Henderson is next in line with 102 stops. Henderson also has a team-high four sacks to his credit. The Herd has had some success moving the ball this season, averaging 406.2 ypg, but it hasn't been able to turn those yards into points, scoring only 22.9 ppg. The team's inability to protect the quarterback is one of several reasons for the lack of scoring, as Marshall has given up 37 sacks thus far. Despite allowing three sacks last weekend, the Herd was able to score 28 points behind 396 total yards, although it still wasn't enough in a even-point loss to Houston. Bernard Morris had a decent game under center, throwing for 260 yards and a touchdown on 20-of-30 pass attempts. For the year, he has completed 62.7 percent of his tosses for 258.2 ypg, with 16 touchdowns and 10 picks. Morris is also dangerous when the ball is tucked away, ranking second the team with 433 rushing yards and three touchdowns. Cody Slate and Darius Passmore have formed a solid tandem in the passing game and they have combined for 105 catches, 1,406 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns this season. Marshall, like its opponent, has really struggled on defense this year, allowing its foes to score 33.8 ppg and gain 446.7 total ypg. The unit has been equally as bad against the run (198.6 ypg) and the pass (248.1 ypg), and it has forced a minuscule seven turnovers to date. Two of those turnovers came last weekend, but they did little to slow down Houston, which rolled up 472 total yards, including 298 through the air against Marshall. C.J. Spillman turned in a noteworthy performance in the loss, as he racked up 16 tackles to go along with a forced and recovered fumble. He currently leads the team with 125 tackles and three forced fumbles for the season. Marshall has been competitive down the stretch and it should be able to outlast a UAB club that hasn't played well at all in recent weeks.
