NCAA Game Summary - Texas-El Paso At Buffalo

POSTED: 12:21 am EDT August 29, 2008

(Sports Network) - Drew Willy threw for 221 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Buffalo Bulls to a 42-17 victory over the Texas-El Paso Miners in non-conference action.

James Starks ran for 179 yards in the win for Buffalo (1-0).

Trevor Vittatoe threw for 199 yards in the loss for Texas-El Paso (0-1), but he was intercepted three times.

The first quarter was dominated by Buffalo. Less than four minutes into the contest, Willy threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to Bryan Kisabeth. Then, with just over three minutes remaining in the frame, the Bulls made the score 14-0 on a 68-yard scoring strike from Willy to Naaman Roosevelt.

Texas-El Paso managed to score two touchdowns early in the second quarter to tie the game at 14-14. First, Terrell Jackson plunged into the end zone from one yard out, capping a 13-play drive. Then, just three minutes later, Jonny Moore caught a two-yard touchdown pass from Vittatoe.

With 30 seconds remaining in the first half, Willy tossed a 34-yard touchdown pass to Gary Rice to give the Bulls a 21-14 lead at intermission.

Buffalo extended its lead to 28-14 in the third quarter when Willy and Roosevelt hooked up for another long touchdown, this time a 56-yard strike.

UTEP cut its deficit to 28-17 with a 27-yard field goal from Jose Martinez in that third quarter.

Unfortunately for the Miners, they were shutout in the fourth quarter. Buffalo blew the game wide open in that final frame. Brandon Thermilus had a pair of touchdown runs of two and 13 yards, bringing the score to its final of 42-17.

Willy extended his streak to 251 consecutive pass attempts without an interception, the longest such span in the nation.
