GAME NOTES: The Kent State Golden Flashes will try to get back in the win column when they host the Buffalo Bulls this Saturday afternoon at Dix Stadium in a Mid-American Conference tussle. The Bulls come into this matchup with losses in three of their last four games, including two in a row. The last time the Bulls were on the field, the team suffered a 31-17 loss to Bowling Green. The Bulls are currently 4-7 overall on the season, but the team has struggled on the road, posting a 1-5 mark. As for the Golden Flashes, they have dropped six consecutive games, including a 24-12 loss in their most recent setback to Temple. At 1-6 in league action, the Flashes are currently sitting in last place in the conference. The Flashes have a slim, 8-7 edge over Buffalo in the all-time series, but the Bulls have won the last two matchups. The Bulls' offense has been inconsistent throughout the season, and the team is currently averaging a mere 23.7 ppg, while producing just 344.6 total ypg. The ground game has struggled tremendously, as the squad is posting just 137.4 ypg on just 3.8 ypc. The passing attack has not been much better, as Buffalo is throwing for a mere 207.3 ypg. Despite the low passing total, quarterback Drew Willy has had a solid season, completing 67.3 percent of his passes. Willy has thrown for 2,238 yards and has 13 touchdowns against six interceptions. In the recent setback against BGSU, Willy threw for 210 yards and one touchdown on 19-of-32 passing. His main target was Naaman Roosevelt, who hauled in six catches for 148 yards. Roosevelt has been the main option all season and is currently leading the team with 55 catches for 676 yards and four touchdowns. Just like the offensive unit, the Bulls have consistency problems on defense, surrendering 28.0 ppg, while being pounded for 406 total ypg. The Bulls head into this contest allowing 235.2 ypg through the air, while also surrendering 170.8 ypg on the ground. In the recent loss to Bowling Green, the defense was done in by the passing attack of the Falcons, which torched Buffalo for 273 yards and three scores. Overall the unit was abused for 413 yards and 23 first downs. The defense did force a turnover and recorded two sacks. Both areas have been a sore spot for Buffalo, as the team has forced just 19 miscues and recorded only 19 sacks. The defense has also struggled in the red zone, allowing the opposition to convert 75 percent of their chances. Trevor Scott has been a beast on the front line and currently has 12.5 TFLs and a team-high 9.5 sacks. The Golden Flashes' entire offense has been predicated on the run, and with the continuous injuries the quarterbacks for KSU have suffered, this trend will likely continue this weekend. First string QB Julian Edelman went down with a torn PCL, followed by injuries to backups Giorgio Morgan and Anthony Magazu. Both players are listed as questionable this week, but could be in uniform come Saturday. If not, Jon Brown will try to hopefully improve on his numbers from last week when he threw for just 76 yards and four interceptions in a 10- point loss to Temple. In that setback, the ground game struggled, rushing for 48 yards on 23 carries (2.1 ypc). Eugene Jarvis finished with only 57 yards and one score on 13 carries. Despite the rough outing, the tailback is leading the squad with 1,486 yards and 10 touchdowns on 6.1 ypc. The Flashes' biggest problem throughout the season has been the inability to stop the run, as opponents are currently churning out 167.1 ypg. Overall the defense for KSU is permitting 385.7 total ypg, and that has led to 29.1 ppg. The team's struggles against the run continued this past week, as the defense was pounded for 184 yards on 55 carries. KSU was able to force only one turnover in the contest, but at the same time collected an impressive five sacks. The team has been inconsistent in both spots, as the squad has forced only 16 turnovers, while recording 22 sacks. Kevin Hogan and Colin Ferrell have been outstanding for this defense, as both players have collected five sacks apiece. Ferrell also has 47 tackles and 11.5 TFLs, while Hogan has posted 10 TFLs and 43 stops. With all the question marks surrendering the quarterback position it is hard to gauge what type of game approach the Flashes will take against Buffalo. However, if the Bulls are able to stop the run, or at least contain it, then they will most likely get the road win.
