GAME NOTES: The Temple Owls have been one of the top teams in the Mid-American Conference this season and they will look to put their flawless league mark on the line this Saturday night when they take on the Toledo Rockets at the Glass Bowl.

After starting the year with two straight losses, the Owls have found their groove, and come into this weekend riding a four-game winning streak. The most recent victory was an out of conference win over Army, as the Owls defeated the Black Knights by a 27-13 margin. It is the first four-game win streak for the Owls since 1985. Three of the four victories have come against league opponents, giving the Owls their first 3-0 start in conference action since the Lyndon Johnson administration (1967).

As for the Rockets, they used a blocked field goal in the final seconds of regulation to slip past Northern Illinois, 20-19. It was the fourth victory on the season for Toledo, which is now 2-1 in MAC action.

These two schools will be meeting for the first time since 2005 when the Rockets pummeled the Owls, 42-17. Thus far it has been a lopsided series, as Toledo has won six of the eight matchups against Temple.

The Owls scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns, snapping a 13-13 tie with Army, and grabbing their fourth straight win on Saturday. It was a surprising win for Temple, considering the team managed just 195 total yards of offense. Two of the team's touchdowns came from the arm of quarterback Vaughn Charlton, but the signal caller only completed 8-of-14 passes for 115 yards in the win, while also tossing an interception and suffering four sacks. The ground game was bottled up, managing just 80 yards on 2.1 yards per attempt. Bernard Pierce was still productive in the win however, as the freshman rumbled for 65 yards and one score on just 11 totes. Kee-ayre Griffin added 41 rushing yards and one score on 12 carries. Since taking over the bulk of the workload out of the backfield, Pierce has been sensational and could earn MAC Freshman of the Year honors if he continues this pace. The tailback has rumbled for 554 yards and six scores and comes into this weekend averaging a healthy 5.8 yards per attempt. As for Charlton, he has not been as consistent, as the quarterback has completed just 52.9 percent of his throws on the year, and comes into this matchup with just 1,041 yards and seven touchdowns against five interceptions.

Although the Owls scored 27 points, the team needed a strong performance from the defense, and that is exactly what Temple received from its unit, holding Army to just 256 total yards. The Owls surrendered 181 rushing yards in the contest, but limited the run-oriented Black Knights to just 3.8 yards per attempt, which should be considered a success. However, Temple's play defensively should no longer be surprising, as team has performed at a high level since the early stages of the season. The defense has done an excellent job against the run, holding opponents to a mere 105.5 ypg on an equally impressive 3.1 yards per carry. The Owls have had some troubles against the pass, allowing 214.8 ypg through the air, and out of the 11 touchdowns surrendered by this unit, eight have come via the pass. However, this defense has also done a tremendous job making the big plays in crucial situations, and heads into this weekend with 15 takeaways and 16 sacks.

The Rockets exploded for 387 total yards of production last Saturday against Northern Illinois, but the team managed just 20 points in the contest. Fortunately however, that was just enough for Toledo to earn the win. DaJuane Collins was outstanding out of the backfield for Toledo, as the tailback rumbled for 139 yards and two touchdowns on 8.7 yards per attempt. Austin Dantin did a commendable job under center while filling in for the banged up Aaron Opelt, as the signal caller threw for 202 yards and one score. Dantin, who completed 17-of-24 passes in the win, relied heavily on wideout Eric Page, who finished the game with 10 receptions for 127 yards. Even though Dantin proved he can manage a game, the Rockets could see Opelt back on the field this Saturday, which would be a huge boost for Toledo. Opelt has been the straw that stirs the drink, as the quarterback has thrown for 1,784 yards and 14 scores against five interceptions on the year. Whether it is Dantin or Opelt under center, Page has been the go-to receiver, as the wideout is leading the team with 51 reception, 767 yards and six scores. However, not to be overlooked is the success of the ground game; mainly Collins, who is leading the charge out of the backfield with 592 yards and six touchdowns on 6.6 yards per carry.

The Rockets' win last weekend was mainly do to the team's performance defensively, as the squad not only blocked an extra point, but also blocked a field goal in the final seconds. Overall the Rockets were solid on the defensive side of the football, holding Northern Illinois to just 321 total yards. Toledo did have trouble stopping the run, as the Huskies netted 164 yards and three scores on 4.4 yards per attempt. Stopping the run has been a major concern throughout the season, yielding 185.3 ypg. However, the unit has also struggled against the pass, as opponents are torching Toledo for 249.7 ypg through the air.

Temple has played very well of late, but if Opelt is fully healthy and on the field Saturday, the Owls might not be able to handle Toledo's passing attack. For Temple to grab a win on the road, the Owls will need to establish the ground game and hope Pierce can keep Toledo's offense off the field.
