Berkeley, CA -- Steven Jackson abused the Golden Bears defense
for the second straight year, rushing for 227 yards and two touchdowns on 35
attempts, in leading the Oregon State Beavers to a 35-21 victory over
California in Pac-10 action. Jackson also pulled down two passes for 12 yards and a score, giving him three
touchdowns on the day overall. His rushing performance marked the first time
California (3-4,0-1 Pac-10) has allowed a running back to gain over 200 yards
since Jackson burned the Golden Bears for 239 yards last season. Derek Anderson converted 18-of-27 pass attempts for 224 yards and two scores
for Oregon State, (4-1, 2-0 PAC-10) which has won four straight contests. Aaron Rodgers had an extremely ineffective game in the setback, converting
just 9-of-34 pass attempts for only 52 yards and one interception. The 52
passing yards by the Golden Bears is their worst performance since tossing
just 89 yards in a 21-17 defeat to Washington State on September 30, 2000. Adimchinobe Echemandu was the only offensive standout for California,
gaining 146 yards on 19 carries, while crossing the goal line twice on the
day. Anderson rumbled into the end zone from two yards out, giving the Beavers an
early 7-0 lead. Oregon State added another touchdown when Jackson scampered in from seven
yards out. A 72-yard interception return by Daymeion Hughes put the Golden Bears on the
scoreboard, cutting Oregon State's lead in half at, 14-7, with just under two
minutes to play in the opening period. With under a minute left in the first quarter, Jackson struck again, this time
the back scored on a 12-yard run, bringing the score to 21-7. Tim Euhus was on the other end of a 20-yard touchdown pass from Anderson,
raising the Beavers lead to 28-7 late in the second period. Echemandu cut the Golden Bears deficit in half once again, when he entered the
end zone from one yard out, bringing the score to 28-14 at the break. Midway through the third quarter, Echemandu struck again, this time he rumbled
into the end zone from two yards out, bringing the Golden Bears within a
touchdown. After allowing 14 straight points, the Beavers extended their lead back to 14,
when Anderson hit Jackson with a five-yard scoring strike. The Golden Bear offense was on the field for under 25 minutes, racking up just
237 yards overall. They converted just 2-of-14 on third down in the losing
effort as well. Despite gaining 493 yards on offense, Oregon State hampered itself by
committing 13 penalties for 151 yards.
