No. 17 Virginia Tech Pounds Northeastern

POSTED: 5:25 pm EDT September 2, 2006

(Sports Network) - Sean Glennon tossed three touchdown passes to guide the 17th-ranked Virginia Tech Hokies past Division I-AA Northeastern, 38-0, in the season opener for both clubs.

The sophomore signal-caller went 15-of-18 for 222 yards with one interception for the Hokies (1-0), while Branden Ore and George Bell each had a rushing touchdown in the win.

Ore also led all receivers with two catches for 81 yards and a score.

Anthony Orio finished 13-of-24 for 103 yards with a pair of interceptions for the Huskies (0-1), who managed just 207 total yards of offense.

Ore opened up the scoring with 9:15 remaining in the first quarter with a six- yard scamper that capped a four-play, 34-yard drive.

Glennon threw his first TD pass of the day just 2:01 later, hooking up with Josh Morgan for a 54-yard strike that made it 14-0.

The always-active Virginia Tech special teams came through with a blocked punt on Northeastern's next possession that set the Hokies offense up at the 12. Four plays later, Bell found the end zone from a yard out.

Glennon and Ore connected for a 55-yard TD with 1:07 left in the second stanza to give the Hokies a 28-0 halftime lead.

The rout continued in the second half, as Carlton Weatherford hauled in a four-yard touchdown pass late in the third quarter to make it 35-0.

Brandon Pace capped the scoring with a 30-yard field goal with 12:30 left in the contest.
