GAME NOTES: Still searching for their first road win of the 2008 campaign, the West Virginia Mountaineers get another crack at it this weekend as they drop in on the Connecticut Huskies for a Big East Conference battle at Rentschler Field in East Hartford. Since dropping back-to-back meetings against East Carolina and Colorado, the Mountaineers have ripped off four consecutive victories, including a 34-17 triumph over Auburn in non-conference action last week. The scoring output for WVU represented the most for the team this season against another member of the Football Bowl Subdivision. As for the Huskies, they've claimed victory in all four of their home games this season and are now 2-1 in league action after crushing Cincinnati last weekend, 40-16. The win snapped a two-game slide for UConn, which is now tied with Pittsburgh for second place in the conference standings behind West Virginia entering this week. The Mountaineers have taken all four previous meetings with UConn, including a lopsided 66-21 decision a season ago in Morgantown in the regular season finale for the Huskies. The 66 points allowed by Connecticut tied for the second-most in school history behind the 69 points tallied by Holy Cross back in 1919.

Trailing 17-3 in the second quarter, the Mountaineers ramped up both the offense and the defense and went on a 31-point scoring spree which left the Tigers in the dust on Thursday night in Morgantown. Noel Devine posted a career-best 207 yards rushing on just 17 carries, while Pat White converted 13-of-21 passes for 174 yards and three touchdowns, although he also was picked off twice, sacked two times and held to just eight yards rushing on the night. White, who has suffered through injury this season, has completed an astounding 71 percent of his pass attempts for 12 touchdowns and just three interceptions and is second on the team with his 72.7 ypg rushing. Devine, who is second in the conference and ninth in the nation this week with his 121.3 ypg, has helped the squad jump to 10th in the nation in rushing with an average of 231.4 ypg over the course of seven outings. The passing offense may not be picking up the yards all the time with just 125.4 ypg (110th nationally), but there's no denying that White seems to be making all the right decisions in the pocket nonetheless.

Auburn ran 10 more offensive plays than the Mountaineers last week, yet the visitors produced a mere 260 yards, compared to 445 yards for WVU. The defense for the Mountaineers was left on the field for more than 21 minutes in the first half alone and more than 35 minutes in the game overall, but it didn't seem to faze the group, especially in the second half as it held Auburn scoreless. Along with his forced fumble, Anthony Leonard also generated a game-high 16 tackles for WVU, while Zac Cooper made one of his two stops against the visiting quarterback. Leading the defense this season has been Mortty Ivy who has a team-best 51 tackles and is the only one of the unit with more than one interception. When it comes to breaking up plays in the backfield the squad doesn't have one single standout performer, rather several players who get their hits here and there. Nonetheless, John Holmes leads the team in sacks with three and is also first with a pair of forced fumbles, even though he has made a total of only 19 tackles this season.

Donald Brown ran for a game-high 150 yards and a pair of scores on Saturday as the Huskies ripped up Cincinnati at home. Brown, who had four catches for 58 yards as well, finished with 29 carries for UConn which helped to offset an average effort by quarterback Cody Endres who completed 18-of-42 passes for 196 yards, but failed to guide the team into the end zone. In fact, because Endres had a tough time of it the Huskies converted just 3-of-18 on third down and had to turn to kicker Dave Teggart who knocked through all four of his attempts on the day. At this point in the season the UConn passing attack has pretty much fallen off the radar, now ranked 109th in the nation with an efficiency rating of just 103.65. Then again, everyone knows that this offense rides the back of Brown on almost every snap anyway. At this point Brown, who leads the nation in rushing with 165.5 ypg, is also one of the country's leading scorers with 14 TDs on the ground. As a safety valve, Brown is also tied for the team lead with his 18 receptions, although he is averaging a mere 6.2 yards per catch.

While Brown was running all over the Bearcats, the visitors were finding it difficult to produce any sort of running game themselves, with a mere 30 yards on 19 attempts. Perhaps the most telling stat for the UConn defense was the one that showed the unit holding the visitors to an incredible 0-of-14 on third down and 0-of-2 on fourth-down plays. Although he tallied just three tackles in the contest, Cody Brown made a huge impact with a sack, a forced fumble and a recovery. Now ranked second in the conference and 29th in the nation with an average of almost two and a half sacks per contest, the Huskies are following the lead set by Cody Brown on the defensive side of the ball. Brown leads the program with his seven sacks, 9.5 tackles for loss and three forced fumbles, not to mention posting the lone blocked kick of the season for the group as well. Of the team's 12 interceptions thus far, three have been credited with Lawrence Wilson which explains a lot when looking at the team's pass defense efficiency rating of just 103.57, which is first in the conference and 19th in the country this week.

Without much of a passing attack the Huskies are going to lean heavily on Brown once again this week, but in the case of WVU it has both Devine and White to carry them to victory.
