GAME NOTES: A couple of programs still in the hunt for bowl eligibility square off at Memorial Stadium this weekend, as the Duke Blue Devils meet up with the Clemson Tigers in ACC play. The Blue Devils enter the game on a losing note, dropping a 27-17 decision to NC State this past weekend. It was the second straight loss by Duke, which fell under .500 at 4-5. The loss also put the Blue Devils at 1-4 within the conference, as they have dropped four straight league decisions since opening with a 31-3 triumph of Virginia. As for Clemson, it put up a good fight against nationally-ranked Florida State, but it wasn't good enough in a 41-27 setback. It was the second loss in three games under Dabo Swinney, who took over as head coach on an interim basis after Tommy Bowden stepped down on October 13th. With the setback, the Tigers now sit at a disappointing 4-5 overall and an even worse 2-4 in the ACC. Clemson, though, does own a 34-16-1 edge in the head-to-head series with Duke and that includes an 18-4-1 advantage in games played in Death Valley. The Tigers have defeated the Blue Devils 13 straight times in Death Valley dating back to 1980.

The Blue Devils are gaining 111.4 ypg on the ground and 221.0 ypg through the air and while those numbers aren't overwhelming, they are decent when considering the team has turned the ball over just 13 times this season. In last weekend's game, Duke totaled 411 yards of offense, but went 0-for-4 on fourth down and converted just 2-of-5 red-zone scoring chances in a 27-17 loss to NC State. Thaddeus Lewis paced the team in defeat by throwing for 317 yards and a pair of touchdowns and rushing for 41 yards. Lewis has enjoyed a solid campaign up to this point, throwing for 1,869 yards, with 14 touchdowns against just five picks. Eron Riley has clearly been his favorite target, snaring 53 passes for 579 yards and six scores on the season. Last weekend, Riley guided the Blue Devils with nine catches and 89 receiving yards. In the backfield, Duke relies on the tandem of Clifford Harris and Jay Holllingsworth, whom have combined for 651 yards and four touchdowns.

Duke has been rather sound on the defensive side of things this season and is limiting foes to 23.1 ppg and 346.0 total ypg. The defense is giving up 145.8 ypg on the ground and 200.2 ypg through the air, but has compensated for some of those yards by forcing 19 turnovers. Last weekend, however, the Blue Devils were unable to generate any turnovers and they also allowed 377 total yards to NC State in a losing effort. The defense, though, surrendered only two touchdowns in the game and gave up only three points after the break. Michael Tauiliili led Duke in the loss with 18 tackles, while Greg Akinbiyi posted seven stops and the team's lone sack. For the season, Tauiliili has racked up an impressive 99 tackles to lead the squad, and Akinbiyi paces the defense with three sacks and 11.5 TFLs.

The Tigers haven't been nearly as prolific on offense as many expected prior to the start of the season, as they come into the weekend averaging a modest 25.6 ppg and 336.7 total ypg. The biggest issue for the offense has been its inability to protect the ball, having committed 24 turnovers already. Last weekend, Clemson was limited to 316 total yards and it committed two turnovers in a 41-27 loss at FSU. Quarterback Cullen Harper was sacked six times in the game and that pressure certainly did affect him, although he still ended up throwing for 240 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Harper has been a big disappointment this season and he has passed for just nine touchdowns against 12 interceptions. As for the ground game, C.J. Spiller paced the team with 66 yards and a score on 13 carries last weekend, while James Davis toted 14 times for 48 yards. On the season, the duo have combined for 961 yards and 12 touchdowns, helping Clemson to average 118.4 ypg on the ground as a team.

On defense is where Clemson has thrived this season, limiting the opposition to 19.4 ppg and 319.5 total ypg. The Tigers, though, are coming off a poor defensive showing in which they allowed 419 total yards to FSU last weekend. The team gave up 266 of those yards and three touchdowns on the ground and that was a bit surprising considering Clemson had allowed just 132.5 ypg and only four rushing touchdowns in its prior eight contests. Clemson did force two turnovers as well notch two sacks and that was about the only positive for the defense last weekend. Kavell Conner posted five stops and his first interception of the year and he leads the Tigers with 71 tackles on the season.

Despite their struggles this season, the Tigers have remained competitive and they should win this game behind a solid defensive effort and some timely scoring from their inconsistent offense.
