GAME NOTES: Mid-American Conference action will take place this Saturday afternoon when the Bowling Green Falcons host the Kent State Golden Flashes at Perry Stadium. The Flashes snapped a four-game losing skid with a convincing, 54-21 victory over Miami-Ohio this past weekend. It was just the second win of the year for KSU, which is now 1-3 in league action. The Flashes have struggled in league play since the beginning of last year, posting a terrible 2-10 mark. As for the Falcons, they dropped their second consecutive matchup this past weekend with a tough, 16-13 setback to Northern Illinois. Surprisingly the Falcons have struggled at home, losing all three of their matchups at Perry Stadium. In regard to the all-time series between the two schools, the Falcons have won 18 of the last 22 meetings, and now hold a commanding 53-16-6 edge over the Golden Flashes.

The Flashes have struggled through most of the season, but the one area the team has enjoyed success is its rushing attack, which is averaging 217.5 ypg on 5.0 ypc. Out of the 27 touchdowns scored by this offensive unit, 17 have come on the ground. While the ground game has been strong, it is rather unorthodox, as the team is being paced by quarterback Julian Edelman. Edelman is currently leading the squad with 781 rushing yards and eight scores, while Eugene Jarvis has been the top tailback, rushing for 362 yards and five TDs. Unfortunately Edelman has not enjoyed the same success with his arm, passing for just 1,129 yards and nine touchdowns against eight interceptions. The last time KSU was on the field the team posted an impressive 54-21 victory over Miami-Ohio, and the main reason for the win was once again a dominating ground attack. Edelman led the way with 158 yards and also scored once, but it was Jarvis who did most of the damage, scoring four touchdowns to go along with 105 rushing yards.

On top of the inconsistent play offensively, the defense has also struggled surrendering 393.0 total ypg and 29.2 ppg. The one major issue for this unit has been its inability to stop the run, as the opposition is pounding KSU for 180.2 rushing yards, and out of the 28 touchdowns allowed by the Golden Flashes, 21 have come via the run. The defense has also lacked big play ability, forcing just 15 turnovers, while recording just 13 sacks on the year. In the recent win over Miami, the Flashes put forth a solid defensive performance, holding the RedHawks to just 318 total yards. The defense did allow 147 yards on the ground, but at the same time the defense did collect an impressive six turnovers, and also recorded three sacks. Brian Lainhart had a tremendous showing in the win, collecting 10 tackles to go along with one forced fumble, one fumble recovery and one interception.

Much like their counterpart, the Falcons are a very unbalanced offensive unit However, in the case of Bowling Green the team relies heavily on its passing attack. BGSU is currently producing 224.9 ypg through the air, and out of the 23 touchdowns scored by this offense, 15 have come via the pass. Tyler Sheehan has done a commendable job under center, as the quarterback has thrown for 1,763 yards and 12 touchdowns against five interceptions. Corey Partridge has been the top option for Sheehan, as the wide out is leading the team with 43 receptions for 406 yards and four touchdowns. Unfortunately not much went right for BGSU in its last contest, as the team was limited to just 13 points in a loss to Northern Illinois. The Falcons totaled just 168 yards, and that includes just 92 yards through the air. Sheehan threw for every yard, and also tossed a touchdown in the loss.

Not much could be said about the defensive play for BGSU, as the team is currently surrendering 356.0 total ypg, and that has led to 24.4 ppg. The major concern for this unit throughout the season has been its inability to stop the run, as opponents are rushing for 181.1 ypg, and out of the 24 touchdowns allowed by BGSU, 16 have come via the run. Unfortunately the defense has also struggled to make big plays and comes into this game with just 13 takeaways and 11 sacks. Once again the Falcons' struggles against the run was the main reason for the team's loss, as the Northern Illinois pounded BGSU for 233 yards en route to a 16-13 win. The Falcons did force two turnovers in the contest, but finished with no sacks and allowed NIU to convert on 3-of-5 red zone chances. Jahmal Brown paced the defense with 12 tackles and one TFL in the game, while P.J. Mahone added 10 stops and one interception.

This matchup does not bode well for the Falcons, even if the team is at home. Bowling Green has been unable to stop the run throughout the season, and should definitely have trouble trying to contain Edelman and Jarvis.
