GAME NOTES: A couple of teams trying to remain in the hunt for a berth in the ACC Championship game collide in Winston-Salem this weekend, as they Boston College Eagles duel with the Wake Forest Demon Deacons. Despite three conferences losses, the Eagles still control their own destiny as they try to return to the ACC Championship game. In order for BC to make a return trip, it must win the Atlantic Division and for that to happen, the program must win this weekend against Wake Forest and next weekend against Maryland. The Eagles kept their hopes alive for a division title with a big win last weekend, upsetting nationally-ranked Florida State 27-17 on the road. It was the second straight triumph by BC, which improved to 7-3 overall. As for Wake, it too is in the hunt for the Atlantic Division title, but it will need some help. The Demon Deacons will not only need to win their ACC finale this weekend, but they will also need Maryland to lose its last two league outings. WF made things much harder on itself following a 21-17 loss at NC State this past weekend. The setback snapped the team's two-game win streak and dropped it to 6-4 overall. With respect to the head-to-head series, BC holds a 7-6-2 edge over Wake, including a 38-28 victory in last season's meeting.

The Eagles come into the weekend producing 154.8 ypg via the run and 173.8 ypg by way of the pass and that has helped to counter some of their 23 turnovers. Last weekend, BC overcame three miscues by gaining 357 total yards, including 176 rushing, in a 27-17 win over Florida State. Montel Harris headed the charge, as he rushed for 121 yards and a touchdown on 25 carries. It was great effort from Harris, the team's leading rushing with 652 yards and five touchdowns on the season. Quarterback Chris Crane also got involved, throwing for 181 yards and a touchdown on 14-of-26 tosses in the win. On the year, Crane has had some issues with interceptions (13), but he has made up for that by throwing for 10 scores and rushing for seven more. Rich Gunnell, who hauled in a touchdown pass last weekend, is the team's top target with 35 caches, while Brandon Robinson is the big-play threat with 513 receiving yards.

BC has been simply outstanding on the defensive side of the ball, as it is holding opponents to a mere 16.9 ppg and 277.5 total ypg. The unit has been especially tough against the run, allowing just 98.9 ypg, while recording 21 interceptions against just six passing touchdowns allowed. The Eagles are also coming off another stout defensive performance in which they limited Florida State to just 285 total yards, including only 73 on the ground. The defense even registered three interceptions, one of which was returned 87 yards for a touchdown by Marcellus Bowman. It was certainly a big play by Bowman, who also had the team's lone sack. On the year, Mark Herzlich leads the Eagles with 83 stops, while Paul Anderson tops the club with five picks.

The Deacons haven't enjoyed all that much success on offense this season, as they are averaging only 20.0 ppg and 308.1 total ypg. The biggest problem for WF has been its inability to run the ball, gaining only 111.6 ypg behind a dismal 2.8 yard per carry average. In their last outing, the Deacons managed just 98 of their 338 total yards on the ground in a loss to NC State. Brandon Pendergrass, the team's leading rusher with 416 yards, went for 71 yards on 16 carries in the setback. Quarterback Riley Skinner completed 21-of-33 tosses for 176 yards, with one pick and one touchdown in the loss. It was a decent effort from Skinner, who has completed 63.8 percent of his tosses with 11 touchdowns and five interceptions on the season. D.J. Boldin has clearly been his go-to-guy, as he paces the club with 63 catches, 622 yards and three touchdowns. Last weekend, he hauled in eight balls that went for 66 yards and a touchdown.

On defense is where Wake Forest is at its best, holding opposing teams to 18.5 ppg and 312.1 total ypg. The unit has fared well versus the run (118.0 ypg), but has also done a good job against the pass, giving up 194.1 ypg with 15 interceptions. The Deacons have created 29 turnovers overall and that has played a big part in this unit's success. Last weekend, however, WF managed only one takeaway, as it surrendered 301 total yards to NC State. The defense did notch three sacks, but it also allowed NC State convert 9-of-16 third down chances. Aaron Curry continued to shine and he led the team with eight stops and a sack last weekend. It was another strong effort from Curry, who paces Wake with 85 stops and 13.5 TFLs on the season.

Both teams are strong defensively, so expect a low-scoring affair this weekend. Wake Forest has been tough at home and has the support of its fans and that should play a part in it pulling out the win.
