NCAA Game Summary - Army At Rice

POSTED: 7:35 pm EST November 8, 2008

(Sports Network) - Chase Clement completed 21-of-28 passes for 384 yards and three touchdowns, as the Rice Owls notched a 38-31 win over the Army Black Knights in a non-conference tilt at Rice Stadium.

Clement also led the Owls (7-3) with 87 yards and a touchdown on the ground. Jarett Dillard had 144 yards and two TDs on four receptions, while Corbin Smiter caught four passes for 104 yards and a score.

Collin Mooney had another strong performance out of the backfield for Army (3-7), carrying 26 times for 207 yards and two TDs.

Rice fumbled away the opening kickoff, which set up an eventual three-yard touchdown run by Mooney to give Army a quick 7-0 lead.

The Owls responded by driving right back down the field, although they were forced to settle for three points on a 46-yard field goal by Clark Fangmeier.

Later in the first quarter, Clement eluded the defense for a 61-yard touchdown run to put Rice on top, 10-7.

Clement later hooked up with Dillard for an 80-yard scoring strike with just under nine minutes remaining in the second quarter.

Army fumbled the ball away on the second play of the ensuing possession. Three plays later, Owls running back C.J. Ugokwe scored on a nine-yard run.

Rice continued its onslaught with just under two minutes to play in the first half, when Clement found Dillard for a 10-yard touchdown pass to extend the Owls' lead to 31-7.

But Army kicker Matthew Campbell gave his team some much-needed momentum by booting a 25-yard field goal as time expired in the first half.

Army opened the second half with a 10-play, 77-yard drive, capped by Ian Smith's two-yard touchdown run to cut the deficit to 31-17.

However, Rice answered quickly, as Clement connected with Smiter for a huge 54-yard touchdown pass.

But the Black Knights would not go quietly. Mooney broke loose for a 61-yard touchdown run with 13:11 remaining in the fourth quarter.

With 4:15 to play, Army's Wesley McMahand made it a 38-31 game on a 43-yard touchdown run.

With time winding down in the contest, the Black Knights defense stopped the Owls on a 4th-and-1 at the Army 31. The Black Knights offense took over with 1:13 remaining, but they promptly went three-and-out.

Army, which entered the game as the nation's ninth-ranked rushing offense, churned out 461 yards (7.1 ypc) and four TDs on the ground. But Clement and the Owls passing game proved too much for the Black Knights to handle.
