GAME NOTES: The Miami-Ohio RedHawks will host their last matchup of the 2007 season when they invite the Akron Zips to Oxford for a Mid-American Conference tussle at Yager Stadium. The Zips snapped a three-game losing skid their last time on the field, defeating the Ohio Bobcats, 48-37. Akron has been dreadful on the road this year, losing five of its six matchup away from home. As for the RedHawks, they snapped a two-game losing streak with a thrilling, 31-28 victory over Buffalo back on November 3rd. With a victory on Wednesday, the RedHawks will clinch the East Division title of the MAC. Miami is currently 4-1 in league play and has a one game lead over Bowling Green, which the team also defeated earlier this year. The Zips will try to win in Oxford for only the second time in school history and the first time since 1939. The Zips posted a 24-13 victory over the RedHawks this past season, snapping a five- game losing skid against Miami-Ohio. For the most part this year the Zips have struggled offensively, but the last time Akron was on the field the team exploded for 48 points en route to a solid victory over Ohio. The team had a solid performance on the ground, which is rare, as the Zips rumbled for 177 yards on 35 carries. Alex Allen exposed the Bobcats for 96 yards and three touchdowns on 14 carries. Allen has played sparingly on the year, rushing the ball just 84 times, but out of those chances the tailback has 333 yards and six touchdowns. The passing attack was also solid in the win, as quarterback Chris Jacquemain threw for 197 yards and two touchdowns. Jacquemain has done a mediocre job throughout the year, as the signal-caller has thrown for 1,297 yards and 10 scores against seven interceptions. Jabari Arthur has been the only real threat for Akron, as the wideout has nearly half the team's receptions, hauling in 72 of the 166 completed attempts. Arthur is also leading the squad with 987 yards and 10 TD receptions. Although the Zips surrendered 37 points against Ohio, the defense still put forth a solid effort, holding the Bobcats to just 359 total yards, including just 120 rushing yards on 3.3 ypc. It was a surprising performance by the Zips, as the team has struggled mightily against the run all season, allowing the opposition to rumble for 181.7 ypg. Akron did not force a single turnover in the contest, but was able to collect three sacks in the win. The team has struggled in both areas, forcing just 17 turnovers in 10 games, while collecting a mere 20 sacks. The Zips have also been terrible inside their own 20-yard line, as teams are currently converting a whopping 87 percent of their red zone chances. Brion Stokes has been a machine for this defense all year and heads into this matchup with team-highs in tackles (81), TFLs (16) and sacks (5.5). The RedHawks dominated the Bulls the last time they were on the field, as Miami posted a solid 475 total yards of offense. Miami did an excellent job on the ground, rushing for 216 yards, while also posting solid numbers through the air, throwing for another 259 yards. The RedHawks were led on the ground by Cory Jones, who rushed for 124 yards on 19 totes. However, Thomas Merriweather did the dirty work near the goal line, scoring twice, while totaling just 28 rushing yards. Quarterback Daniel Raudabaugh had an outstanding performance in the win, as the signal-caller threw for 259 yards and two scores on 20-of-26 passing. Throughout the season the main source of production for this unit has come from the passing attack, as the team is posting 238.0 ypg via the pass. In eight games, Raudabaugh has completed 55.6 percent of his throws and has 1,765 yards and 10 scores against five interceptions. The defense also put forth a solid effort in the win, holding the Bulls to just 320 total yards, including just 103 yards on 27 totes. The team also did a commendable job against the pass, holding the aerial assault of Buffalo to just 217 yards. It was a surprising performance for Miami which has struggled on this side of the field all year, especially against the run, as teams are churning out 174.3 ypg. Overall this defense has surrendered 401.3 total ypg and that has led to 26 ppg. Miami has forced 19 turnovers on the season, while collecting 25 sacks. Clayton Mullins has been terrific for the RedHawks this season, as the linebacker has racked up 105 tackles and 7.5 TFLs. The RedHawks can clinch the division with a win on Wednesday and considering how poorly Akron has played on the road this season and throughout its history against Miami, expect the RedHawks to do just that.
