Ex-UCLA Player O'Bannon Leads Lawsuit Over Use Of Images

POSTED: 10:13 pm EDT July 21, 2009

(Sports Network) - Former UCLA basketball player Ed O'Bannon is the lead plaintiff in a class action lawsuit against the National Collegiate Athletic Association regarding the use of former college players' likenesses in video games, jerseys and other paraphernalia.

Former collegiate athletes currently receive no compensation when their likenesses are used in different venues, but O'Bannon is leading the charge to change that. According to several media outlets, the lawsuit seeks undisclosed damages and also looks to change the way the NCAA compensates former players.

The lawsuit does not say anything about current players -- only former players who O'Bannon feels should receive royalties after they leave college.

O'Bannon was the Most Outstanding Player of the 1995 NCAA Tournament, when UCLA won the national championship. His image is currently used in DVDs and photos regarding that tournament.
