South Carolina's Downey Declares For NBA Draft

POSTED: 9:55 am EDT April 7, 2009

(Sports Network) - South Carolina junior point guard Devan Downey has decided to submit his name for the NBA Draft.

Downey will not hire an agent, leaving him eligible to return for his senior season.

"I feel at this point in my career it is important for me to test the draft waters to see what the next logical step in my basketball career is," said Downey in a statement released by the school.

Downey led South Carolina in scoring and assists last season, averaging 19.8 points with 4.5 assists in 31 games. He also posted a team-best 89 steals and scored in double figures 30 times.

"We support Devan's decision to enter his name in the draft and evaluate himself against other potential draftees at workouts," said South Carolina head coach Darrin Horn. "We will continue to work to gather accurate information in an effort to help Devan make the best decision for himself when the time comes."

Downey helped South Carolina to record of 21-10 with a 10-6 mark in the SEC. The Gamecocks tied Tennessee for first in the SEC East, but lost to Mississippi State in the quarterfinals of the conference tournament and suffered a first-round setback to Davidson in the NIT.
