Purdue Holds Off Ohio State For Big Ten Title

POSTED: 7:21 pm EDT March 15, 2009

(Sports Network) - E'Twaun Moore had 17 points, as No. 24 Purdue topped Ohio State, 65-61, to win its first Big Ten Tournament and clinch a spot in the NCAA tourney.

JaJuan Johnson added 16 points for Purdue (25-9), which beat Penn State in the quarterfinals and Illinois in the semis. It was the Boilermakers' first appearance in the final since the first Big Ten Tournament in 1998 when they lost to Michigan.

"Defense definitely saved us," said Johnson. "We did a good job of limiting the other team to one shot. We were real solid on the defensive end. We knew if we just kept staying solid on defensive end eventually our shots would fall in. And that's what happened tonight and that's how we ended up winning."

Robbie Hummel, who was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player, added nine points, 11 rebounds and five assists for Purdue, which was given a No. 5 seed in the West Region of the NCAA Tournament and will play Northern Iowa Thursday in Portland.

Evan Turner had 22 points and 10 boards for Ohio State (22-10), while Jon Diebler and William Buford each scored 15.

"I just don't think we played with enough intensity on defense," said Diebler. "Again, they made some big shots in the corner, especially E'Twaun Moore. He had some big threes."

Despite the loss, the Buckeyes garnered an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament as a No. 8 seed in the Midwest with a first-round matchup against Siena on Friday in Dayton.

Approaching the midpoint of the second half, Purdue scored eight consecutive points to take control. Moore began and ended the run with a three-pointer, as the Boilermakers took a 48-41 lead with just under 11 minutes to go.

The teams traded baskets, and inside six minutes to play, Johnson's jumper pushed Purdue's lead to 58-49.

But the Boilermakers missed their next nine shots and didn't score for five minutes, allowing Ohio State back in the game. The Buckeyes scored six consecutive points after Johnson's jumper, the last coming on a Turner free throw that got OSU within 58-55.

After the clock rolled under a minute, Keaton Grant drilled a three to boost Purdue's lead back to six. Ohio State then missed at the other end and fouled Moore, but he missed the front end of a 1-and-1. With 16.7 seconds left, Turner drove for a basket and was fouled. He made the free throw to bring the Buckeyes within 61-58.

Chris Kramer sank two free throws with 14.7 seconds left, and Buford missed a three at the other end for OSU. Kramer made two more foul shots with 4.2 ticks left to seal the win.

Ohio State scored eight consecutive points late in the first half. Turner had a jumper, and Diebler added consecutive threes for a 30-24 Buckeyes lead with 1 1/2 minutes to go.

Purdue got a free throw from Nemanja Calasan to go into halftime down five, then evened the game shortly into the second half. Moore drained a three and Hummel followed with a jumper to get the Boilermakers within one. Johnson then added a free throw to knot the game at 33 a little more than four minutes in.

Game Notes

Grant finished with eight points for Purdue, which shot just 34.4 percent from the field and 13-of-20 from the free throw line...Ohio State made 43.1 percent of its shots and 10-of-14 from the foul line...Moore and Diebler each went 5- for-10 from three-point range...Turner, Hummel, Johnson and Moore were named to the All-Tournament team, with Illinois' Mike Davis being the fifth selection.
