Report: UNC Asheville Center George Has Partial Foot Amputation

POSTED: 2:51 am EDT October 18, 2008

(Sports Network) - UNC Asheville center Kenny George, the biggest man in college basketball at 7-foot-7 and 370-pounds, is reportedly expected to miss the upcoming season after having some of his right foot amputated.

According to a report in Friday's Asheville Citizen Times, a long-time family friend revealed that George has had at least two surgeries and other procedures to correct problems in the foot after it became infected over the summer at a summer camp in Las Vegas.

The paper quotes Sonny Parker quoting George's father as saying parts of George's right foot had to be removed, while UNCA head basketball coach Eddie Biedenbach reportedly offered a statement which indicated that George would not return to the team for the 2008-09 campaign because of the surgeries.

Biedenbach is also quoted as saying that while George will not play basketball this season, the 22-year-old is committed to returning to school in January and resuming his studies for the spring semester.

The hulking native of Chicago posted 12.4 points and 7.0 rebounds per game, adding 93 blocks for the Bulldogs in his junior season, en route to being named the Big South conference's defensive player of the year. His effort helped UNCA record a school-record 23 wins in 2007-08 and a share of the regular-season title with Winthrop.
