Missouri Knocks Off Disappointing USC

(Sports Network) - Demarre Carroll scored 29 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, leading Missouri to an 83-72 victory over 19th-ranked Southern California in the consolation bracket of the Puerto Rico Tip-off.

J.T. Tiller added 14 points and Leo Lyons chipped in 13 for the Tigers (4-1), who followed up a loss to Xavier in the opening round of the tournament with a win over Fairfield before Sunday's triumph.

Dwight Lewis scored 15 points to lead Southern California (3-2), which lost to Seton Hall on Thursday and beat Chattanooga on Saturday in its first two games of the tourney. Daniel Hackett, Taj Gibson and Kasey Cunningham each finished with 11 points in defeat.

Lewis made the second of two free throws with 7:25 remaining to give USC a 64-63 lead. It was the last advantage for the Trojans.

Tiller followed with a three-pointer and Lyons added a bucket moments later to give the Tigers a 68-64 edge with 6 1/2 minutes to play. The Trojans drew within one on a basket and a free throw by Donte Smith, but Missouri closed the contest with a 15-5 run.

Carroll keyed the burst with a three-pointer and Tiller scored five during the game-ending spurt.

The first half featured five lead changes and two ties, as USC carried a 43-37 advantage into the intermission. The Trojans led by as many as 12, but Missouri finished the half with an 8-2 run to make it a six-point game.

Missouri trailed by as many as 11 early in the second half, but tied it at 57-57 just before the midway point.

Game Notes

Carroll and Tiller were each 3-for-3 from three-point range, as Missouri hit 7-of-19 from beyond the arc and shot 49.2 percent from the field overall...The Trojans shot 46.4 percent from the field and connected on 5-of-12 three-point attempts, but made only 15-of-28 free throws...Leonard Washington scored nine points and grabbed nine rebounds for USC.
