Cleveland, OH -- (Sports Network) - Calvin Betts grabbed a career-high 18 rebounds and added 11 points, as Buffalo escaped Quicken Loans Arena with a 65-62 victory over Kent State in quarterfinal action of the Mid-American Conference Tournament. Max Boudreau ended with 13 points and Titus Robinson chipped in 10 for the third-seeded Bulls (20-10), who will now face second-seeded Ball State in the semis on Friday. Golden Flashes leading scorer Chris Singletary notched 13 points but fouled out with 4 1/2 minutes left to sink Kent State (19-14), the defending conference champ and sixth seed. Al Fisher, coming off a 25-point effort against Northern Illinois in the opening round of the tournament, shot just 2-for-14 from the floor and logged nine points in the loss. The evenly-matched contest was just that throughout, as Buffalo held a slim 31-30 edge at the break with the lead changing hands several times in the second half. The play of the game came when Singletary fouled out with KSU trailing 54-53 with 4 1/2 minutes left. After the clubs traded free throws, Buffalo sank two more at the stripe and Boudreau got a layup to go with just over two minutes left for a 59-54 advantage. The Bulls missed 2-of-4 free throws down the stretch and held just a three- point lead when Kent State called a timeout with 7.5 seconds to play. The Flashes couldn't get a shot off though, as Andy Robinson came up with a steal to secure the win.
