St. Thomas, VI -- (Sports Network) - Jeremy Wise scored 16 points, doled out six assists and made several critical free throws down the stretch, as the Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles outlasted the Iona Gaels, 64-63, in the Paradise Jam.

R.L. Horton had 19 points and four rebounds for Southern Miss (4-1), which was coming off a thrilling 76-72 overtime win over La Salle on Saturday. Sai'Quon Stone and Craig Craft both chipped in nine points.

Kashif Pratt scored 14 points to lead the Gaels (2-2), who came away with a resounding 75-55 win over Valparaiso the last time they were on the hardwood. Gary Springer totaled 12 points and eight rebounds and Scott Machado added 11 points in defeat.

Iona trailed by as much as eight points in the first half before battling back and carried a slim 33-31 advantage to the break, and then they opened a 10- point cushion eight minutes into the second half.

The Golden Eagles chipped away and eventually reclaimed the lead, 58-57, on a Horton jumper with 3:03 remaining. Wise then drained a bucket and converted a pair from the foul stripe to push the margin to five before Jermel Jenkins hit two layups for Iona, the second with 23 seconds left.

After Wise made two more free throws, Pratt connected on a layup with 10 seconds to go. Craft then turned the ball over and Iona had a chance to win the game, but Jenkins missed a three-pointer.
