Vols And Hoyas Do Battle In Orlando

POSTED: 10:34 am EST November 28, 2008

(Sports Network) - The second round of the Old Spice Classic features a battle of ranked teams, as the Tennessee Volunteers and the Georgetown Hoyas are set to square off.

The 12th-ranked Volunteers have won their first four games this season, including a 78-64 victory over Siena in the opening round of this event on Thursday. Clearly, Tennessee will face its biggest test to date this afternoon, and the hope is that the club can make another run at the SEC title this season.

As for 21st-ranked Georgetown, it improved to 3-0 yesterday with a 58-50 triumph over Wichita State. The Hoyas have yet to face an opponent that even approaches Tennessee's ability, so it will be interesting to see how coach John Thompson III's club responds. Clearly, there will be several tough games to play once the Big East Conference slate begins.

The only previous meeting between Tennessee and Georgetown took place in 2003, and the Hoyas won that matchup by a 70-60 final.

Tennessee's Tyler Smith was named the SEC Preseason Player of the Year. He is scoring 18.0 ppg on 56.5 percent shooting from the floor through the first four games of the campaign, and he is pulling down 5.5 rpg while dishing out 4.0 apg. Wayne Chism adds 12.0 ppg and 8.8 rpg to the mix, and J.P. Prince brings 11.5 ppg to the floor. Cameron Tatum has been productive off the bench, scoring 10.5 ppg. The Vols are posting 89.8 ppg on 53.2 percent field goal efficiency, and they are limiting opponents to 67.2 ppg on 38.5 percent shooting. In the victory over Siena yesterday, Chism scored 15 points from his center position. Smith and Renaldo Woolridge contributed 14 points apiece for Tennessee, which got 11 points from Prince. The Vols overcame 19 turnovers with 50 percent shooting from the floor and tremendous defense.

Fans of the Hoyas are undoubtedly excited about the play of freshman center Greg Monroe. The big man is scoring 15.0 ppg on 64 percent shooting from the floor, and he is pulling down 6.3 rpg. Monroe has blocked 11 shots in three outings, and he is an 86.7 percent shooter from the foul line. Austin Freeman checks in with 13.7 ppg, and DaJuan Summers adds 12.3 ppg. Chris Wright (10.3 ppg) and Jessie Sapp (10.0 ppg) provide plenty of balance to the lineup. Georgetown is averaging 70.0 ppg while limiting opponents to 55.0 ppg on 29.6 percent shooting from the field. The strong defense was evident in yesterday's win over Wichita State, as Georgetown limited the Shockers to 27.9 percent overall shooting. The Hoyas got 18 points from Freeman and 14 points from Summers in the win. Monroe posted 11 points and three blocks before fouling out.
