Eastern Michigan (1-3) At St. John's (3-1)
GAME NOTES: The St. John's Red Storm will gun for their second straight win tonight, as they host the Eastern Michigan Eagles in the consolation round of the NIT Season Tip-Off at Carnesecca Arena. The Red Storm started this tournament in the East Regional, where it defeated Cornell (86-75) before losing to host Boston College (82-70). Most recently, SJU returned back home, where it posted a convincing 79-44 victory over Howard on Saturday. With the victory, the team improved itself to 3-1 overall and 2-0 at home. As for EMU, it has dropped three straight games following a 119-48 trouncing of Marygrove in its season opener. The Eagles were placed in the North Regional of this tournament, where it lost to both Purdue (87-58) and Georgia (61-60). Following those losses, the team was downed at Detroit, 62-47, on Saturday. Tonight's bout is the first-ever meeting between EMU and SJU on the hardwood.
The Eagles shot a sub par 35.6 percent from the floor and committed a whopping 26 turnovers, as they were defeated at Detroit on Saturday. EMU did make 4- of-10 attempts from long distance and 11-of-13 at the foul line, but it wasn't enough. L.J. Frazier guided the team in defeat with 14 points, while Solomon Farris had 13 points and eight boards. The duo however, combined for 12 turnovers as well. Brandon Bowdry added eight points and eight boards to the mix and he continues to lead the team in both scoring (15.8 ppg) and rebounding (9.0 rpg) on the season. Justin Dobbins, who was held to just six points last game, ranks second the squad with 13.8 ppg for the year.
The Red Storm knocked down 46.2 percent of its total shots, including 7-of-15 from three-point range, as it cruised past Howard on Saturday. The team won the battle on the boards, 42-32, in addition to forcing Howard into 17 turnovers. D.J. Kennedy headed the charge with a double-double that consisted of 17 points and 13 rebounds. Paris Horne posted 15 points and four boards, while Justin Burrell logged 14 points in the win. SJU played without its second leading scorer Anthony Mason Jr. who is expected to miss the remainder of the season following foot surgery. Kennedy though, stepped up in his absence, as he continues to lead the Red Storm in scoring (17.5 ppg) and rebounding (7.5 rpg) on the season. Horne contributes 12.0 ppg and Burrell chips in 11.8 ppg for SJU, which is putting forth 77.0 ppg as a team this season.
SJU is the deeper and more talented team here and it should have little trouble getting past a slumping EMU squad tonight.
