GAME NOTES: The SIU-Edwardsville Cougars and East Tennessee State Buccaneers will take another crack at posting their first win, as they meet in the consolation round of the Charleston Classic today. The Cougars opened tournament play against the host team and they gave the College of Charleston a run for it before falling 72-66 on Friday. For SIUE, the game marked the beginning of its first season playing a NCAA Division I schedule. Despite the loss, it was a rather solid performance for the Cougars, who lost five of their top six scorers from last season. As for ETSU, it also fell short in its season opener on Friday, losing out to Temple by a 79-65 score. The loss was certainly disappointing, especially for this Bucs team that welcomes back three starters and eight players from last year's club that went 19-13 overall. ETSU and SIUE have met one time previously, with the Bucs capturing a 56-52 victory during the 1982-83 season.

The Cougars made good on 9-of-19 three-pointers, but committed 24 costly turnovers in a six-point loss to the CofC on Friday. The miscues ruined an otherwise decent effort from SIUE, which hit on 41.2 percent of its shots from the floor and held a 36-35 edge on the boards. Mark Yelovich came off the bench and led all scorers with 21 points in the setback. It was a great debut for the freshman, who made 8-of-10 shots from the field. Barry Wellington also turned in a big effort, posting 19 points and four boards. Wellington, a transfer from Mineral Area College, nailed 7-of-15 field goals in his first appearance for SIUE.

The Bucs shot a poor 36.2 percent from the floor, including just a 6-of-22 effort from downtown, as they were defeated by Temple on Friday. The team even struggled at the foul line (9-of-18) and was also outrebounded, 50-44, in the contest. Mike Smith paced ETSU in defeat with a double-double of 19 points and 10 rebounds. It was a big-time performance by Smith, who averaged 7.0 ppg and 4.7 rpg in a complementary role last season. Courtney Pigram added 18 points and six boards in the game and that was no surprise considering he led the team with 15.6 ppg last season.

Despite the loss, ETSU is still a talented club and it should display that in a win over SIUE today.

Predicted Outcome

ETSU 78, SIU-Edwardsville 65
