Duquesne (4-0) At (7) Duke (6-0)
GAME NOTES: Two undefeated teams collide in Durham this afternoon, as the seventh-ranked Duke Blue Devils play host to the Duquesne Dukes in non- conference action from Cameron Indoor Stadium.
Mike Krzyzewski's Blue Devils are a perfect 6-0 on the season for the second straight season and 31st time in school history. After claiming the 2K Sports Classic title in New York City last week, Duke returned to the friendly confines of Cameron Indoor Stadium to post a 20-point win over Montana, marking the 63rd consecutive home win over non-ACC opponents. In addition, the Blue Devils have won 12 straight affairs against members of the Atlantic-10 and are 74-27 all-time against current members of the conference.
The Dukes have won all four of their games to begin the 2008-09 campaign, taking two decisions at home and two on the road thus far. Ron Everhart is in his third season at Duquesne, which comes into this contest, off a 79-69 victory at USC-Upstate.
This is the sixth-all-time meeting between these two teams. Duke has won four of the previous five matchups, including all three in Durham.
Sophomore forward Damian Saunders recorded his first-career double-double at USC-Upstate this week, leading the Dukes with 20 points and 12 rebounds, in a 10-point win in Spartansburg. Junior Jason Duty contributed with a season-high 17 points, followed by senior Aaron Jackson, who had a strong all-around game, with 15 points, 10 assists and eight rebounds. The victory was the fourth wire-to-wire win of the season for Duquesne, which is averaging a steady 82.8 ppg, on a healthy .527 shooting. Jackson has clearly been the most productive player on the roster, averaging team-highs of 17.3 points, 7.0 rebounds and 7.5 assists per game. Saunders is a close second in scoring (16.8 ppg) and rebounding (6.8 rpg). Bill Clark is the third double-digit threat on the team with 12.0 ppg. Eric Evans gives the team valuable minutes off the bench, with 9.5 ppg.
The Blue Devils are a balanced team with the ability to win games at either end of the floor. The team has certainly demonstrated that in the early stages of the season boasting of a +22.8 scoring advantage. The team is shooting a solid .465 from the floor, leading to 81.8 ppg. The defense has limited foes to a mere 59.0 ppg, on .378 shooting. In addition, Duke is outrebounding the competition by 12.8 boards per outing, while forcing 17.8 turnovers per game. Sophomore forward Kyle Singler is the go-to-guy, leading the squad in scoring (16.7 ppg), rebounding (6.8 rpg) and assists (3.1 apg). There is plenty of scoring depth behind Singler, with guards Jon Scheyer (12.7 ppg), Nolan Smith (12.7 ppg) and Gerald Henderson (12.2 ppg) all getting in the mix. The Blue Devils used a 30-9 first-half run to put the game out of reach against Montana last time out. Playing without co-captain Greg Paulus (forearm contusion), Duke got balanced scoring with four players finishing in double figures, led by Smith and Henderson, who netted 14 points apiece. Singler added 13, followed by 12 from Scheyer. The Blue Devils forced the Grizzlies into 20 turnovers, while outrebounding Montana, 42-26.
The Blue Devils are almost automatic when it comes to winning non-conference games at home. Duquesne is definitely playing well right now, but lacks the overall depth to pull off an upset of a top-tier national power on the road.
