Duke Routs Georgia Southern

POSTED: 12:55 am EST November 12, 2008

(Sports Network) - Kyle Singler scored 19 points for the second straight game and pulled down eight rebounds as No. 8 Duke ripped Georgia Southern, 97-54, in the second round of the 2008 2K Sports Classic Tuesday night.

Singler scored 19 and had 10 boards in Duke's 80-49 thrashing of Presbyterian on Monday, and nearly equaled those numbers on Tuesday.

"I think we played a good overall game besides shooting free throws," said Singler. "I don't know whether it was the ball being slick or whatever, but we were playing hard tonight and sometimes you can rush your shot when you get up to the line. Guys have to settle down and just focus a little more on their shot and their form and balls will go in."

Nolan Smith scored 13 points, while Gerald Henderson and Greg Paulus each scored 11 points for the Blue Devils (2-0), who advance to the semifinals of the 2K Sports Classic. Duke will play either Massachusetts or Southern Illinois next Thursday at Madison Square Garden in New York.

The Minuteman and Salukis square off on Wednesday.

Willie Powers scored 17 points to lead Georgia Southern (1-1), which edged Houston 65-63 on Monday to advance to the second round. Julian Allen added 10 points and six rebounds for the Eagles, who shot just 28 percent from the field and trailed by 27 points at the half.

"Our team is obviously not ready to play a game of this caliber," said Georgia Southern coach Jeff Price. "I thought we had a great win last night and hoped to have some carry over. But with six new players and just a lot of newness on our team, we just weren't ready for a game of this magnitude against a really, really good team."

The Blue Devils opened with a 16-4 run and never looked back. The Eagles cut the deficit to nine on an Antonio Hanson three-pointer with 11:53 left in the first half, but that was the last time Duke's lead crept below double digits.

Duke closed the first half on a 36-18 push, and took a 52-25 lead into the intermission. The gap breached 40 points when two Paulus free throws put Duke up 76-35 with 11:58 left in regulation, and tapped out at 47 points, 95-48, after a Martynas Pocius dunk with 3:01 to play.
