Thabeet, UConn Crush Bryant

POSTED: 9:26 pm EST November 29, 2008

(Sports Network) - Hasheem Thabeet had 16 points and 12 rebounds as the second-ranked Connecticut Huskies downed the Bryant Bulldogs, 88-58, at the XL Center.

Craig Austrie had 15 points and six boards while Jeff Adrien chipped in 14 points and nine rebounds for the Huskies (6-0), who have won their last three games by double-digits.

Connecticut coach Jim Calhoun garnered his 780th win in the game, which moved him into a tie with Lou Henson and Lute Olson for eighth place on the all-time list.

"It was a good win. It all comes from the way we practice," said Adrien. "And that started with Coach - he warned us about teams that have been upset."

Cecil Gresham had 19 points and Ryan McLean added 10 points and four boards for the Bulldogs (1-3), who failed to follow up their first win of the season -- last Saturday against Quinnipiac -- with another victory.

It was a tight game through much of the first half, but the Huskies ripped off a 16-3 run to take a 38-23 lead, as Austrie capped the run on a layup with a bit over three minutes to play in the first half.

Jerome Dyson then hit a basket in the closing moments of the first half and Connecticut held a 45-28 lead going into the locker room.

The Bulldogs tried to keep it close in the second half, but the Huskies steadily increased their lead and held a 72-49 advantage on Thabeet's slam with under 10 minutes to play.

Bryant was held without a point for almost four minutes as Connecticut cruised to the finish line.
