Cal Poly (1-3) At Utah State (3-0)
GAME NOTES: Non-conference foes will collide in Logan this evening as the Utah State Aggies play host to the Cal Poly Mustangs. Cal Poly has been idle since last Saturday when it dropped a 76-64 decision to BYU on the road. The Mustangs are now 1-3 on the season, and their lone victory came over North Florida. As for Utah State, it is 3-0 to start a season for the first time since the 2003-04 campaign, and the team has won eight straight regular season tilts dating back to last season. Furthermore, the Aggies have won 55 consecutive regular season non-conference home games, which is the second longest streak in the nation behind Duke's 64 in a row. The most recent outing for the squad took place on Tuesday by a 75-49 final over Weber State. Utah State holds a 15-2 series lead over Cal Poly, but the Mustangs won last season's meeting by a 83-69.
Generating offense has proven to be problematic for Cal Poly this season, as the team is only scoring 64.0 ppg on 39.3 percent shooting from the field. The Mustangs are also being outrebounded by nearly 11 boards per contest. The top offensive performer for Cal Poly is Titus Shelton, as he is netting 15.8 ppg on the strength of his 51.2 percent shooting from the floor. Lorenzo Keeler checks in with 11.8 ppg as the only other double-digit scorer in the lineup. In the most recent outing against BYU, Cal Poly shot 39 percent from the floor while allowing the Cougars to connect on 52.4 percent of their field goal attempts. The Mustangs also suffered a 44-26 rebounding disadvantage. Shelton netted 22 points in defeat, and Shawn Lewis pitched in 15 points.
Everything seemed to go right for Utah State in the most recent victory over Weber State, as the team shot 52.0 percent from the floor, while limiting the Wildcats to 38.1 percent field goal efficiency. The Aggies only turned the ball over five times, and all five starters reached double figures in scoring. Gary Wilkinson led the way with 18 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the field, and Tai Wesley narrowly missed a triple-double with 14 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists. Considering the fact that Wesley also blocked four shots, he showed his full range of ability. Jaxon Myaer tallied 13 points, Tyler Newbold netted 12 points and Jared Quayle contributed 10 points. Through three games, Utah State is scoring 69.0 ppg, while allowing 52.7 ppg to the opposition. Wilkinson is posting 17.7 ppg on 76.9 percent shooting from the field, and he is ripping down 8.7 rpg as well.
Expect Utah State to avenge last season's loss to Cal Poly. Wilkinson has been tremendous, and he will get plenty of help from Wesley.
