Cal Poly (0-2) Vs. North Florida (0-2)
GAME NOTES: A couple of teams still shooting for their first win of the 2008-09 campaign soldier on in the 2008 BYU Travelers Invitational tonight as the Cal Poly Mustangs and the North Florida Ospreys meet for the very first time at the Marriott Center. In the case of the Ospreys, members of the Atlantic Sun Conference, they were beaten soundly by host school BYU on Thursday night in a 74-41 decision, marking the 49th straight home win for the Cougars at the Marriott Center. Four days earlier UNF began the new season with a 75-60 setback versus Savannah State. As for the Mustangs, they hung tough with Rice last night, but in the end the Owls were just too much for Cal Poly in an 81-76 final. Like North Florida, the Mustangs began their season with a loss as well, in their case they fell to Arkansas-Little Rock on Sunday in a 67-40 final. On Saturday all four teams in this tournament will again reshuffle, with North Florida taking on Rice and the Mustangs going after the Cougars.
Lorenzo Keeler scored a team-high 20 points on 7-of-17 shooting from the field for the Mustangs last night, but the team still came up short in the decision against the Owls. Titus Shelton tacked on 15 points and six rebounds, but he also accounted for six turnovers, while reserve Chaz Thomas contributed 11 points in 24 minutes before fouling out. Aside from just 6-of-19 shooting behind the three-point line, Cal Poly turned the ball over 15 times and was also beaten on the glass, 39-25. More than anything else through the first two games of the season, the Mustangs have had a tough time defending out on the perimeter because those two opponents have combined to shoot 17-of-31 from three-point range, compared to a mere 9-of-35 for Cal Poly. As a result, there is a 16-point differential between the Mustangs and the competition already, even with Shelton putting up 15.0 ppg to lead the program.
There was very little for the Ospreys to be pleased about on Thursday night, especially with the way that they performed in the first half. UNF missed all six tries from three-point range in the period and converted a mere 5-of-25 from the floor, en route to a 35-12 halftime deficit from which it was never able to recover. The Ospreys didn't have a single player score in double figures, with Cameron Lovelace coming close with his nine-point effort on 3- of-8 shooting behind the three-point line. The team turned the ball over 16 times and was handled quite easily in the rebounding department (45-27), logging just five offensive rebounds. One of the weaker offensive teams in the nation again this season, North Florida has posted just 50.5 ppg through the first two outings, which means the group is being outscored by 24 ppg. Cortez Riley and Lovelace are trying to keep the team competitive with 11.0 and 10.0 ppg, respectively, but it isn't nearly enough for a squad that is averaging 19 turnovers per contest and shooting a mere 27.6 percent behind the three-point line.
Cal Poly can put up some points when the right opponent is on the floor facing the Mustangs and this is one of those times.
