B-Y-U (5-0) At Idaho State (1-3)
GAME NOTES: Landing in Pocatello for the first time in three decades, the BYU Cougars challenge the Idaho State Bengals in a non-conference affair at Holt Arena tonight. The Cougars are undefeated to this point in the campaign, running off five straight victories. The team has been out of action since last Saturday however, the day the squad defeated Cal Poly at home by a score of 76-64 for its 51st straight win at the Marriott Center -- the nation's longest home win streak. As for the Bengals, they won their very first game of the campaign over Eastern Oregon by five points, but since then have fallen in three straight. On Tuesday, the team was taken down by Long Beach State in an 88-82 final. Oddly enough, the matchup with the 49ers was the second straight double-overtime outing for the Bengals and their third consecutive game that could not be decided in regulation. The Cougars hold a commanding 30-6 advantage in the all-time series versus Idaho State and are 16-4 in Pocatello, yet this is just the second visit to the city by BYU in the last 56 years. BYU has won four in a row and 19 of the last 20 decisions against the Bengals, including a 90-69 blowout last season.
Lee Cummard and Chris Miles handled much of the offense for the Cougars last weekend as they combined to shoot an amazing 25-of-34 from the field in an effort to make up for Jonathan Tavernari who really struggled. While Cummard and Miles were posting 28 and 24 points, respectively, Tavernari came up empty on all 11 of his field goal attempts, including 0-of-7 behind the three-point line, which left the program only 3-of-15 out on the perimeter for the game. Tavernari did have 10 rebounds, but that didn't make up for his ineptness in the scoring department. Tavernari is now second on the team in scoring with 15.8 ppg and is second on the boards as well with 7.4 rpg. Leading the team in both departments is Cummard with averages of 19.4 points and 7.6 rebounds per contest. At the moment, the Cougars are outscoring opponents by an average of 23 ppg, shooting a healthy 50.5 percent from the field.
As if the Bengals had not played enough overtime periods already, the team had to put in an extra 10 minutes versus LBSU earlier this week in the six-point setback at home. Deividas Busma and Amorrow Morgan both tallied 20 points, the former adding 11 rebounds, while Demetrius Monroe had a double-double of his own with 12 points and a game-high 14 boards. Matt Stucki contributed 10 points for a team that turned the ball over 21 times. One of the top performers in the Big Sky Conference, Morgan leads the program with his 22.3 ppg, shooting 49.3 percent from the field and having made more field goals (34) than any of his teammates has attempted to this point. Monroe is responsible for 13.0 ppg and 12.3 rpg, the latter making him one of the leaders in the nation in the early going. However, even with Monroe's efforts in the paint the Bengals are beating opponents on the glass by just three rebounds per game.
They may be unfamiliar with their surroundings in this game, but the Cougars certainly know the way to the win column, which is where they will be again after they dismiss Idaho State.
