Bowling Green (13-15) At Miami-Ohio (14-14)
GAME NOTES: With an endless list of possibilities regarding the team's placement in the upcoming Mid-American Conference Tournament, the Bowling Green Falcons try to focus their attention on the task at hand, which is confronting Miami-Ohio at Millett Hall this afternoon. The Falcons entered the weekend with a record of 7-8 in MAC play after losing to Buffalo in grand style on Tuesday night, 96-50. The defeat snapped a brief two-game win streak for BGSU, which has won just one of seven MAC road games in 2007-08. As for the RedHawks, currently 8-7 in conference play, they too had a game earlier this week that they'd much rather forget against previously-ranked Kent State. After putting up 94 and 73 points in the two previous outings, the RedHawks laid an egg with just 39 points in an 11-point loss to the Golden Flashes on the road. BGSU won the first meeting against the RedHawks earlier this season with a 55-52 triumph at home, which means Miami now leads the all-time series by a count of 71-47.
Trailing by double digits barely four minutes into the first half, Bowling Green had no chance against Buffalo on Tuesday night. The Falcons ended up shooting just 32.8 percent from the field, 4-of-19 beyond the arc and had more turnovers (21) than made field goals (20) in the awful showing. Chris Knight dropped in 11 points, matched by Brian Moten who made good on 3-of-6 behind the three-point line off the bench. On a team that is scoring just 64.2 ppg this season, Knight is second on the scoring list with his 10.7 ppg and is first on the glass with 7.3 rpg. However, those numbers still do not cover up the fact that he has converted just 25.5 percent from three-point range and 61.1 percent at the charity stripe. Nate Miller accounts for a team-best 13.1 ppg and has spread his talents to the glass (6.4 rpg) and the passing attack (79 assists).
Like the Falcons, Miami had trouble getting its offense in gear earlier this week, posting just as many turnovers (16) as made field goals. The RedHawks had eight baskets in each half, but none came behind the three-point line. Tim Pollitz produced a team-best 13 points, while fellow starter Michael Bramos hit a mere 2-of-13 from the floor and missed all six of his three attempts, to finish with six points. Although he has played four fewer games, Bramos is currently tied with Tim Pollitz for the top scoring mark on the team with 15.9 ppg, the latter also pacing the group with his 7.0 rpg and 87 assists. Kenny Hayes checks in with 12.9 ppg, but when it comes to league competition Hayes has dialed up the intensity and leads all scorers with his 15.0 ppg, thanks to 41.4 percent shooting from behind the three-point line.
Both of these teams need to bounce back after pathetic efforts earlier in the week. Based on the first meeting of the season that was decided by just three points, Miami has to be the favorite if for no other reason than this game is being played in Oxford.
