Pittsburgh, PA -- (Sports Network) - Sam Young scored 33 points and grabbed seven rebounds, as fourth-ranked Pittsburgh pulled away to beat Belmont, 74-60, at the Petersen Events Center. Levance Fields added 17 points and six assists for Pittsburgh (5-0), which played without its leading scorer, DeJuan Blair, who sat out with knee swelling. Jermaine Dixon chipped in 10 points for the Panthers. "Belmont is an excellent team," Pitt head coach Jamie Dixon said. "I think when we scheduled this game, people kind of thought we were crazy for wanting to play such a good non-conference team." Matthew Dotson scored 16 points to pace Belmont (1-2), which has lost two in a row. Alex Renfroe was the only other Bruins player to reach double figures with 12 points and 12 rebounds. "With Pitt missing DeJuan Blair -- we didn't know he wasn't going to play -- and to go out there and shoot the way we did was unfortunate," Belmont head coach Rick Byrd said. "If we shoot the ball the way we can, it's a different ball game." Pittsburgh held a slight lead for most of the first half, and a Jon House layup in the final minute brought Belmont within 37-31 at the break. The Panthers held the margin for the first few minutes of the second half, until they rattled off 10 consecutive points. Young began the run with a jumper, Fields had a layup, and Young followed with three buckets in a row for a 51-37 lead with 14:11 left in the contest. "I thought Sam really stepped up tonight when we needed him," Dixon said. "When we had kind of a makeshift lineup on the floor, we were able to at least get the ball to Sam in good position and he made things happen." With just over 10 minutes left in the game, Biggs had a layup that boosted Pitt's advantage to 57-40, and Belmont didn't get within single digits the rest of the way.Game Notes:Going into Tuesday Blair led Pitt with 17.5 points and 13.3 rebounds per game this season...The Panthers have won 33 consecutive games against non- conference opponents at home, a school record...Pitt shot 62.2 percent (28- of-45) from the field, and 6-of-12 from three-point range.
