Don't Get Angry With Dry Cleaner Over Spots

CLEVELAND -- There are many items that get on your clothes that are very difficult to remove.
Have you ever gotten an item back from the dry cleaner, only to realize that there are spots on your clothing that weren't originally there? On Your Side Troubleshooter Chris Caswell said that the culprits that stain clothes are right under your nose.
But how did the stains get there?
"Take an apple for instance -- you bite into an apple," said Mark Evans of Hollywood Cleaners. "You wait for a few minutes, five to 10 minutes, you come back and that apple starts turning brown."
Caswell said the apple is oxidizing. And the same thing happens to stains on clothing.
"The whole garment is submerged, and if the color only comes out in one spot, it's because there was something on there," Evans said.
Caswell said that the worst culprits are items that contain alcohol, such as perfume, cologne, hairspray, and even toothpaste.
Also, deodorant mixed with perspiration can pull the color from fabric. The best solution is to put those items on before you get dressed.
Other items that stain include bubbles, salad dressing, and champagne. Those substances are especially tough to get out of silk.
Here's a tip to get ketchup out of your clothes: Dab the spot with hydrogen peroxide.
According to the International Fabric Institute, always let your dry cleaner know where a spot is when you drop clothes off.
Caswell also suggests not getting angry with your dry cleaner if a spot appears on an item, because it may have been something you didn't think would leave a stain.
