Sick Of Bambi Eating Garden? Spread Hair Over It
Several Inexpensive Remedies Can Deter Deer

CLEVELAND -- Many northeast Ohioans are ready for spring, including the thousands of deer roaming across the area.
But don't let your spring garden become a buffet line. In this week's Betcha Didn't Know, Troubleshooter Chris Caswell reported on how to protect your plants from deer.
There are a lot of inexpensive home remedies to deter deer.
Soap on a rope on a stick is one thing that will keep the deer away from your garden.
If you can stand the smell, mix five eggs and five quarts of water, and then spray the mixture on your shrubs and plants.
Also, try putting human hair in a bag made of net, mesh or cheesecloth. Or, just spread the hair directly onto your yard. But you'll have to do it again after it rains, because showers wash away the scent.
"By hanging human hair and soap on a tree, it only lasts (a) very, very little (time), only (about) a week," said Angelo Petitti of Petitti's Garden Center.
The best way to keep deer away from shrubs and plants is to wrap them up.
"You could also wrap your plants in netting -- that's another way," Petitti said. "They don't like to be tangled up."
But, if you want something that you can't see, Petitti said that try beech wax.
"It's not a toxic chemical," he said. "And it glues onto the plant. You can mist it onto your plants, and it will keep the deers out of there."
One spray will keep the deer away for six to nine months. But once you see new growth on your plants, you'll need to touch it up.
If you do want to try the human hair method, visit your local hair salon. Many salons said they would be happy to hand over their hair.
For other deer remedies, visit your county library.
