The average price of a gallon of gasoline has topped $2 in California.
Analysts say the rest of the country will be vulnerable as the summer driving season gets under way.The latest average price for a gallon of gas in California is $2.03 according to one measure, and more than $2.05 on another. The federal Energy Information Administration blames the higher prices on two unexpected refinery shutdowns. The Midwest is vulnerable to higher prices because it must import supplies from the Gulf Coast. And Northeasterners will see shrinking gasoline supplies as New York and Connecticut switch over to ethanol-based summer blends. Both states have banned MTBE because of problems with contaminated drinking water.AAA says that the national average for a gallon of regular, unleaded gasoline is $1.68. One month ago, it was $1.60.
