New Gas Record Prompts Eye On Alternatives

Average Gas Price Rises To Nearly $3.79

The price of gas has jumped again.

AAA put the national average cost of a gallon of regular at nearly $3.79. That's up a penny from Thursday, 39 cents higher than a month ago and 68 cents more than this time last year.

The average price of premium is now nearly $4.17.

With each record-setting day, motorists are trying to figure out how to save.

The auto club said some are rethinking their Memorial Day travel plans.

A survey estimated there will be about 1 percent fewer cars on the road. That's still more than 31.5 million.

Brian LaFave, of Sheboygan, Wis., is so fed up, he said he's going to park his pickup and not buy any gas at all for at least a month.

LaFave, who started the effort May 11, said he's not going to go anywhere he can't get to by bike or on foot for 31 days.

He said he's not even going to accept rides with his friends unless they happen to be in the neighborhood.

The Energy Department forecast recently that prices would top out next month at an average of $3.73 a gallon. Many analysts now expect the national average to hit $4 a gallon in the coming weeks.

President George W. Bush, who is headed to Saudi Arabia as part of his Middle East trip, said he will again press for a boost in Saudi oil production.

In January, his plea fell on deaf ears and the price of gas has continued to zoom upward.

Gas Giveaway In Las Vegas

The demand for lower gas prices has promted a publicity stunt in Las Vegas that apparently worked too well.

Hundreds of cars clogged streets near the Las Vegas strip Thursday after Cricket Communications offered $10,000 worth of free gas.

Cars were lined up for miles to tank-up on the phone company.

But the gas came a little too late for one motorist, whose car ran out of gas while waiting.
