G.I. JOE: THE RISE OF COBRA

Fraser Happily Re-Enlists With 'G.I. Joe' Director

'Mummy' Star Has Cameo In Sommers' 'The Rise Of Cobra'

POSTED: 10:39 am EDT July 28, 2009

Brendan Fraser has reunited with his "Mummy" director Stephen Sommers -- and he couldn't be more thrilled wrapped up, so to speak, in the filmmaker's latest big-screen adventure.

Fraser has a surprise cameo role in Sommers' "G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra," the highly anticipated summer blockbuster based on the iconic Hasbro action figure line.

In an @ The Movies interview during "G.I. Joe's" post-production, Fraser said that he was geared to work with the cast Sommers' assembled for the film, which includes Arnold Vosloo, who played the title character opposite Fraser in the first two "Mummy" movies. And while Fraser's time on the production was short, he said Sommers made every minute there for the actor worth it.

"Steve's created a cavern of actors that he reaches out to. He's the sort of guy who says, 'Hey, I'm sorry I couldn't use you in this movie because I didn't have a part for you, but I'll make another one and I got this for you,'" Fraser said. "It just goes to show that he's an all-around good guy. He loves his job and is so good at what he does. No one -- no one -- I work with shows the enthusiasm for what he does as a director."

Fraser said that he was taken by Sommers' energy during the filming of the first "Mummy" movie in 1999 and how he doesn't let the elements dog him in any sort of way.

"I'll never forget it -- there he was in the desert, in Erfoud, Morocco, and he's squinting into a monitor and its 107 degrees. (Getting ready for the take) he shouted, 'Ready ... and don't suck! Action!' Fraser recalled with a howl. "He was staring at a monitor and his tongue was hanging out. I'm not kidding. He was like a dog with his head out the window of a car and just hanging on for the ride because he just loves what he does."

Fraser is geared to be a part of the "G.I. Joe" movie, because like many adults in their 40s, his love for G.I. Joe goes back to his childhood. Fraser said that he owned a classic 12-inch version of the time-honored action figure, which took an unexpected detour on one of his adventures.

"My Joe ended up dangling from a tree by his parachute strings because I threw him off the balcony, because I couldn't get enough air just throwing him up and down and getting the parachute to deploy," Fraser said, laughing, in a recent @ The Movies interview. "It wound up deploying when I threw if off of the balcony and it floated over to the tree. It spent the winter, there, sadly, twisting in the wind. The next spring I had to bring it down with a rake because my mom wouldn't let me climb the tree."
