A 52-year-old man committed suicide after kidnapping his ex-girlfriend early Wednesday morning.

Donald Harris went to Mobil Martin Inc., an ambulance service, in Akron at about 1:15 a.m. and kidnapped his ex-girlfriend, Courtney Harshman, police said.

Police said that Harris took her to her townhouse in Copley.

Her roommate, Vicky Griffin, said that she woke up seeing a gun in her face and her friend tied up and gagged.

Griffin then jumped through a second-floor window, even though she was afraid of heights, to try and save her friend.

She yelled for someone to call 911. SWAT surrounded the townhome and sent a robot inside to see if Harris was still inside.

Police said they had gotten away. Harshman was found later in Boston Heights. Police said both women are OK.

Officers found the suspect just before 7 a.m. in a wooded area in the national park off Akron-Peninsula Road. They said he died from a self-inflicted gunshot.

Harris was the former fire chief in Garrettsville, in northern Portage County, but resigned a few years ago.

Sources said he was married with a daughter.
