Cleveland Ranks Highest In Car Rental Rates

Add-Ons Knock Up Prices

Cleveland ranks first in a recent survey, but it's not the kind of thing for which the city wants to be known.

NewsChannel5's Adam Shapiro reports that Cleveland was ranked as the most expensive place in the country to rent a car, but there's one problem: The survey is wrong.

Renting a car in Cleveland is a lesson in addition.

"There's a 10 percent airport fee, 7 percent tax; if you take it to another city, it's always more," Larry Morgan, owner of Thrifty Car Rental, said.

But according to a recent national survey of rental car rates, Cleveland has the highest.

USA Today slapped the results on its front page under "Snapshots," but Morgan said that it's better to call it a "cheap shot."

"While it may have been accurate for the day they picked, in general, it was completely inaccurate," he said.

Many car renters can't believe the results.

"I would expect New York to be higher, because expenses are higher there," renter Mike Allen said.

In fact, rates are higher in New York and in other cities, according to Hertz Rent-A-Car, but Cleveland outranks them in another area, WEWS reports.

"I was amazed at the quote on quote fees," car renter Zane Daggett said.

They're called "add-ons," and Cleveland has plenty.

If you rent a midsize car here and you pay sales tax, concession fees, transportation fees and city tax, it's about $22 extra and a whopping 26 percent of the bill.

"That's outrageous," Daggett said.

By comparison, the extras in New York are 13.25 percent, and in Chicago, they're 21 percent -- much lower than the 26 percent in Cleveland.

"Phoenix and Seattle, without a doubt, are higher than Cleveland," Morgan said.

Add-ons are the kind of addition that hits rental car customers in the wallet, WEWS reports.

Runzheimer International Consultants conducted the survey and said that rental car rates fluctuate daily.

The most expensive rates are in effect on Wednesdays, which is a peak business day for the companies, but rates drop on Thursdays, when rental car companies prepare for weekend deals.
