UPDATED: 11:06 a.m. EST January 17, 2001

Studies show that St. John's Wort can help treat depression, but studies also show that it could interfere with the effectiveness of oral birth control, according to USA Today.

Researchers at Duke University Medical Center analyzed the herb and found that it may also interfere with the effectiveness of asthma medications.

The newspaper says that a government-sponsored study on the herb is expected later this year.
