Back Pain Could Be In Your Head

Stress, Anger Or Fear Could Trigger Unexplainable Pain

drawingCLEVELAND, Posted 3:01 p.m. June 23, 1999 -- A new theory about back pain may surprise you.

According to Team5 Health Specialist Lee Jordan, while it's not an idea mainstream medicine agrees with, one New York doctor believes the mind could be sparking back pain.

Dr. John Sarno says back pain is the brain's reaction to emotion, specifically stress, anger or fear. Rather than face it, the brain redirects it, reducing blood flow to certain parts of the body. This he says causes pain and that pain distracts your mind from the rage or unacceptable feelings.

Researchers say that back pain is growing 14 times faster than the human population.
