Baby Found Unresponsive Inside Hot Car
Parents Arrested, Face Child-Endangerment Charges
POSTED: 5:32 p.m. EDT July 3, 2002
LAKEWOOD, Ohio -- Experts say parents should never leave a child inside a closed car on a hot summer day, but on Wednesday, a local mother and father did just that.
NewsChannel5's Kareen Wynter reported that the 1-year-old is still hospitalized but doing OK Wednesday evening.
Lakewood police responded to a call Wednesday afternoon about a child who was sitting alone in a car in a parking lot.
When officials arrived at the scene, the boy was unresponsive, but breathing.
His parents were apparently doing some shopping and left the boy inside the vehicle. It's not clear how long the parents were shopping.
The couple speaks Spanish, and police are looking for a translator so that they can get more information from them.
The car window was left down about an inch, but officials said that even so, the temperature inside the car was more than 100 degrees.
The couple was arrested and both face charges of child endangerment.
The boy is expected to be all right. It is not yet known if the child will be placed in the care of relatives.
Police and Children's Service officials are investigating.
