There are several parenting styles, with attachment parenting being one of the most popular.

With attachment parenting, the relationship between parents and children focuses on cultivating trust. Parents listen and allow children to follow what feels right. With this parenting style, children know that mom and dad will be there when needed. They also feel safe and independent. Read more about Attachment Parenting.

Although attachment is quite popular, there are other parenting styles that are used by parents.

The Gordon Model is made up of a very specific set of communication skills that enable parents to positively influence their children's behavior. One key to the model is a skill called active listening.

With this style, active listening is employed along with I-messages. This is a tool that parents use to explain to the child that her behavior is causing the parent a problem. This model also follows the Golden Rule: "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you."
