Certain Birth Orders Shouldn't Head Down Aisle

Get Tips On How To Have A Successful Marriage

There are a lot of things that make up a good marriage, but does your birth order have anything to do with a successful marriage?

Marriage

According to iVillage.com, it does. According to one of the guest experts -- Dr. Kevin Leman -- your birth order plays a role.

For example, the best birth order marriages are:

  • Only child and youngest
  • first born and youngest
  • middle child and youngest
  • first born and last born

The absolute best combination, however, also pinpoints gender, which would be a female first born marrying a male youngest child who has older sisters.

Leman said that first born married to first born is likely to be a high-friction relationship. Another bad combination is first-born married to a middle child. The danger, he said, is the middle child may modify his or her own behavior to please the first born.

With the first born marrying the last born, the first born can teach the last born how to get organized and to take life seriously sometimes. The last born can teach the first born that it's OK to have fun once in a while.

Basic characteristics:

First born: needs someone to show him/her pleasure of sunsets, rainbows, and to remind her that it can be fun to let her mind wander and do something crazy or different.

Last born: needs someone to show him/her that while having fun is a wonderful thing, it takes hard work and perseverance to turn those daydreams into reality.

The worst combinations:

  • Middle child married to a middle child
  • Last born married to a last born
  • Female last born with no brothers and male last born with no sisters
