Officers Shoot Pit Bull After It Latches Onto Boy

Boy Not Seriously Injured

POSTED: 12:39 p.m. EST November 18, 2001

A pit bull attacked a young Cleveland boy Saturday and would not let go, prompting police to shoot the dog.

Neighbor Adeline Myers of Tacoma Avenue explained that there wasn't much anyone could to do help the boy.

"They had to shoot him; that's the only way," she said. "He wouldn't turn that boy loose. I mean, he was holding him, jumped up on his back and had his claws around him, holding him," she said.

The dog eventually let go, but then it charged at police officers. The officers said that they shot and killed the dog to protect themselves.

Doctors said the boy will be all right.
